He wasn't just Ken

I saw the movie Barbie and found it very boring... and Ryan Gosling as Ken didn't convince me either. I was even a little confused by all the rivalries that were created with the movie Oppenheimer. But when I saw Ryan Gosling's performance at the 96th Academy Awards, reminiscent of the famous Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend stage in Gentleman Prefers Blondes, I surrendered... it was an amazing performance.

All the details were there, the suit in the same shade of fuchsia pink as Marilyn Monroe's dress, the pink gloves, the costumes of the dancers, the Ken-delabra, the stairs... It was a beautiful tribute to Marilyn Monroe. The participation of Slash from Guns N 'Roses also contributed to the scene... He may have just been Ken, but he was without a doubt the winner of the night. Now take a look and comment!

I'm just Ken Ryan Gosling's performance in tribute to Marilyn Monroe

As this blog is about paper dolls I share Caducado's cute art work. He draws a lot of pin-up boys and he drew this Ken paper doll of Ryan Gosling with his outfits from the movie Barbie.

Frankly, my dear...

Exploring Hollywood's legendary male icons in paper doll form I found this Clark Gable paper doll.

He was known as "The King of Hollywood's Golden Age". His style has become as iconic as his films. He was known for his sophisticated appearance, often wearing clothes that accentuated his broad shoulders and narrow waist. The brilliantine hair and mustache added charm to his look. Gable showed up in tailored suits, white shirts and smartly tailored trousers.

Gable's fashion choices were unmistakable and iconic, showing that the "King of Hollywood" had plenty of style and talent.

The real romantic heroe

I remember watching the movie Solomon and Sheba when I was a kid. Of course I couldn't forget the ecstatic dance scene by Gina Lollobrigida.

However I couldn't remember who King Solomon was... so looking on the web I noticed that Tyrone Power, would play the role of King Solomon but he died in a fight scene in the heat of Spain and was replaced by Yul Brynner.

Although I've seen some of his films, mainly with the character Zorro, I couldn't associate him with him. I decided to look it up on the web and found it very beautiful... a real movie star!

This search led me to some paper dolls published in 1941 by Merrill Publishing Company, with an incredible resemblance... and it looks like he had a great closet!  😍

Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell were a popular film crew and most of the costumes pictured in this issue are from their film roles. For Tyrone Power some are from "The Mark of Zorro" and "Blood and Sand". Continuing to search the web it seems he has inspired some of the most highly regarded paper doll artists.

To the next!

Para Tyrone Power alguns são de "The Mark of Zorro" e "Blood and Sand".

Rebel Rebel

I noticed James Dean's birthday it's today, February 8. I always found him an intriguing person....and cute.

"His very brief career, violent death and highly publicized funeral transformed him into a cult object of apparently timeless fascination."- in IMDb Mini Biography By: Ed Stephan[stephan@cc.wwu.edu]

I wont do any biography about James Dean... there's no need.

James Preston as James Dean in Matthew Mishory's Joshua Tree 1951: A Portrait of James Dean, 2012

But after seeing the movie Joshua Tree 1951: A Portrait of James Dean I searched on web and found some stories I didn't no know, but I must confess it filled my imagination...

It doesn't admires that he once said:“I am not a homosexual. But, I'm also not going to go through life with one hand tied behind my back.”

Have you ever heard about the cat and the mouse stories between him and Marlon Brando?

"When Dean was living in NYC, studying at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg(...)while attending a class conducted by Marlon Brando in 1951, Dean stayed after the session to meet his idol, beginning an intense sexual affair with Marlon that lasted through the winter. Dean was completely smitten with Brando, often stalking him when Marlon was out on dates with others. Dean groomed himself to become a Brando clone, copying his walk, speech and acting style." in Gay influence.blogspot.com

There is another storie with Paul Newman(and other affairs)... Once Newman went to talk with Elvis Presley[who was considered for the part of Brick, the football buddy Skipper(Paul Newman), in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof ] and" Elvis asked about Newman’s friendship with James Dean. Newman swore that Elvis told him, “I’ll make a confession. I’m about the straightest dude that ever walked the planet. But if that f*cker ever called me, I’d come running. I guess you’d say I have an obsession with Dean.” (I should made those my own words)- in Gay influence.blogspot.com

So... enough of this, let's talk about paper dolls. Paper dolls are my business!

I found some interesting paper dolls on web that I would like to share with you here... I hope you like it.

(Eu deveria fazer essas as minhas próprias palavras)- in Gay influence.blogspot.com

I'm not a blue engel

For today I chose to pay a simple tribute to one of my favourite actresses bringing together here some paper dolls illustrated by various and talented artists. The 27th of December would be her birthday.

One of the most iconic figures from Hollywood's golden age in the 30's and 40's, the one who became eternal in cinema as a femme-fatale.

Jean Cocteau said: “her name starts as a caress and ends as a lash”. I'm talking about:

 Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992)

Marlene Dietrich by ALberto Vargas
Combining the right dose of talent and beauty with a strong personality, she created the vamp image in dozens of films that filled the imagination of thousands of people around the world, surrendered to her charms for decades in cinema, fashion and politics.

Her presence was as strong on screen as in real life. Provocative for the time, going against conventional standards, loving men and women equally and challenging powers and institutions, she affirmed the female role and her condition as a woman.

During World War II she faced the power of Nazi Germany, refusing her invitation to support the Reich. She supported the resistance, created a fund with Billy Wilder to help Jews and dissidents to leave Germany, being recognized for her commitment and service to the cause receiving decorations from several countries.

After abandoning the glamour of cinema, she still filled the stages with her presence, performing songs that she immortalized: Falling in Love Again(Can’t Help It), Lili Marlene or La vie em rose. In these shows, her image was still that of a diva, combining glamorous dresses, wigs and stage lighting in whose technique she was expert.

Afterwards, she withdrew from public life for good, living almost in seclusion, in poor health, in her room in Paris from where she kept in touch with the outside world only by telephone.

“It's the friends you can call up at 4 am that matters,” she said.

She also accepted to participate in a biographical documentary entitled simply “Marlene” (1984), by Maximilian Schell, where only her voice is heard, refusing to always be filmed.

Marlene D. died at the age of 90 and was honoured as a soldier at her funeral. At the ceremony the priest said: "Everyone knew her life as a film and music artist, and everyone knew her difficult moments... She lived like a soldier and would like to be buried like a soldier."

The rest is history. 😊

“It's the friends you can call up at 4 a.m. that matter” disse ela. The rest is history.
