You're a natural

The Blue Book Modelling Agency years

Although Marilyn Monroe is one of the most analyzed figures in film history, her early steps as a model at the Blue Book modelling agency remain one of the least explored phases.

On August 2, 1945, when she walked through the agency's door, in Los Angeles, her life changed forever.

Norma Jeane arrived accompanied by photographer Potter Hueth, wearing a simple, impeccably pressed white dress and carrying a portfolio containing only a few photos. The choice of dress was unusual for models, but it drew attention for how it accentuated her figure. According to the agency director, Emmeline Snively, the only other pieces she owned were a white bathing suit and a teal-blue suit ‘that didn’t do a thing for her".

During the interview, observing other models, Norma Jeane murmured: "Those are the prettiest girls I have ever seen,’ she muttered, almost to herself, before turning to Miss Snively. ‘Do you think I could ever get my picture on a magazine cover?’ Miss Snively looked her up and down. ‘Of course,’ she smiled. ‘You’re a natural.’

Much of what Marilyn learned from the Blue Book modeling agency would stay with her throughout her life and literally opened many doors for her, allowing her access to a career in film.

After all, it all started with a simple, universal, profoundly human desire:

I wanna be loved by you, just you 🧡

She has a natural freshness*

Norma Jeane different out fits used with Potter Hueth

*Potter Hueth said it.
In the summer of 1945, photographer Potter Hueth, after seeing Norma Jeane's first photos taken by David Conover, recognized the young woman's potential and helped her create her first portfolio, opening doors for her entry into the fashion industry by signing a contract with the Blue Book Modeling Agency.
The photographs captured a fresh and natural style for a fashion catalog (and for paper doll inspiration!), highlighting two beachwear sets from the Catalina brand:

Catalina brand Striped Bikini A two-piece set with striking vertical stripes
  • The Striped Bikini: A two-piece set with striking vertical stripes. Norma Jeane loved this style so much that she repeated it in several other photo shoots, including Joseph Jasgur and Bruno Bernard aka Bernard of Hollywood.
Catalina brand bikini The Seagull Set, a two-tone two-piece swimsuit, consisting of a plain top and shorts printed with small seagulls on the front of the bottom line
  • The Seagull Set: A two-tone two-piece swimsuit, consisting of a plain top and shorts printed with small seagulls on the front of the bottom line.
Other looks explored by Hueth that highlighted Norma Jeane's natural beauty:

Norma Jeane paper dll and outfits blue and white striped sweaters and straw hats

  • "Peasant Girl": In these photos, she wore blue and white striped sweaters and straw hats. This look conveyed a romantic and rustic innocence, often photographed in outdoor settings.
Girl Next Door" Norma Jeane wears a red wool sweater combined with a long tartan-style pleated skirt.
  •  "Girl Next Door": Displaying this simple image, Norma Jeane wears a red wool sweater, which she had already worn at the Conover factory and which she would later wear with other photographers, contrasting perfectly with the white fur and black spots of the Dalmatian, combined with a long tartan-style pleated skirt.
See you next time at the doors of the Blue Book Agency! 😉

Under the horoscope of Marilyn Monroe

As you can see from the blog's logo change, this year we'll be under the horoscope of Marilyn Monroe. 😍

It is with enormous enthusiasm that I present to you a very special series, designed by me, to celebrate the centenary of the woman behind the myth:

Norma Jeane – The Pin-Up Years Paper Doll

Base doll with casual outfit
Norma Jeane paper doll with casual outfit

norma jeane marilyn monroe Earl moran  As I told you before the first time I saw Marilyn Monroe was in a magazine. I must have been about seven or eight years old. The article said something like, “Hollywood killed Norma Jeane to make way for Marilyn Monroe.” My early literacy didn't allow me to understand the metaphor. What caught my attention was a photo of Norma Jeane posing for Earl Moran. I ran to my brother and said, “Look what they did, they killed this girl to put this one in her place…” Then he explained that they were the same person. From that moment on, her images were etched in my memory.

Marilyn: the most photographed, reinterpreted, and reinvented woman.

Marilyn Monroe is perhaps one of the most written about, studied, and photographed figures in film history. So, instead of revisiting her most iconic looks—the white dress, the pink dress, the gold dress—I decided to take a different path. I want to return to the beginning. To Norma Jeane's first steps as a pin-up, model, and starlet, long before Hollywood transformed her into a universal symbol.

When she met Emmeline Snively, director of the Blue Book Modeling Agency, she described the young Norma Jeane like this: “She had a beautiful body, but her clothes didn't flatter it. Her hair didn't either—it was shapeless, a tightly curled tangle that didn't enhance her features. She didn't wear makeup, but she had beautiful skin, eyes, and teeth. The following year, I spent a lot of time thinking about and transforming Norma Jeane Dougherty, or Marilyn Monroe, as she is known today.”
For an entire year, Snively worked with her: he taught her how to pose, how to dress, how to style her hair, how to look at the camera. She prepared her for her first screen test—the true starting point of the metamorphosis that, little by little, would give rise to the dazzling star the world knows today.

My tribute

Paper doll base with casual outifs Norma Jeane

This series is a work of fan art that will illustrate her evolution from her days as a young factory worker in an aircraft components factory, still called Norma Jeane Dougherty, to the moment she begins to emerge as a model and then a young actress. A simple tribute that seeks to honor the memory she left us. After all, it all started with a simple, universal, profoundly human desire:

I wanna be loved by you, just you

And nobody else but you 💋

The Pin‑Up Years Paper Doll”.

A minha literacia infantil não me permitiu compreender a metáfora. Então ele explicou-me que eram a mesma pessoa.

Afinal, tudo começou com um desejo simples, universal, profundamente humano: I wanna be loved by you!

A sneak peek at what's to come in the next few months

Today I'm lifting the veil slightly on what's going to happen here on the blog in the coming months. I'm preparing a paper doll series dedicated to the centenary of Marilyn Monroe.

Instead of focusing on the iconic dresses already so often depicted and seen in paper dolls, I decided to go back to the beginning and draw inspiration from Norma Jeane's looks—before fame, before platinum hair, before Hollywood. I'm looking for the base paper doll for the series.

I started with a suggestion of a tutorial I found years ago on the web.

tutorial marilyn monroe paper doll

So, I looked for references that I liked and those that gave me tips for creating an interesting pose.

boneca de papel, bonecas de papel, bambola di carta, cut outs, muñeca de papel, paper dolls, paper doll, paperinukke, paperinuket, papieren pop, papierpuppe, papirdukke, papirdukker, pappersdocka, poupée de papier, papieren aankleedpoppen, papierowa lalka, bambole di carta,бумажные куклы, pappersdockor, kağıt bebekler, klippdockor, muñecas de papel, cut out, papierenpo, papierenaankleedpoppen, paperinuket, papieren poppen, Puppe aus Papier, muñequita de papel, papír baba, boneka kertas,紙人形 papierová bábika, bábóg páipéir, ninot de paper

I will try to combine a pose of young, sweet Norma Jeane, full of that simplicity that marked her early days as a model, with a pose of Marilyn Monroe that will allow me to continue the project, contemplating her years as a starlet and perhaps as an already established star. In the coming months, I will share outfits inspired by her pin-up years, her photo shoots as a professional model, her early films (which are numerous), and the looks that defined her rise as the movie star she is remembered as today. I hope you enjoy this adventure as much as I'm enjoying preparing it. I'm sharing with you a work-in-progress paper doll base.

Tell me: which paper doll base do you prefer(from left to right)? 😜

I look forward to seeing you on June 1st!

Until then.

Digam-me: qual a paper doll base que preferem?

He wasn't just Ken

Translator
I saw the movie Barbie and found it very boring... and Ryan Gosling as Ken didn't convince me either. I was even a little confused by all the rivalries that were created with the movie Oppenheimer. But when I saw Ryan Gosling's performance at the 96th Academy Awards, reminiscent of the famous Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend stage in Gentleman Prefers Blondes, I surrendered... it was an amazing performance.

All the details were there, the suit in the same shade of fuchsia pink as Marilyn Monroe's dress, the pink gloves, the costumes of the dancers, the Ken-delabra, the stairs... It was a beautiful tribute to Marilyn Monroe. The participation of Slash from Guns N 'Roses also contributed to the scene... He may have just been Ken, but he was without a doubt the winner of the night. Now take a look and comment!

I'm just Ken Ryan Gosling's performance in tribute to Marilyn Monroe

As this blog is about paper dolls I share Caducado's cute art work. He draws a lot of pin-up boys and he drew this Ken paper doll of Ryan Gosling with his outfits from the movie Barbie.

Frankly, my dear...

Exploring Hollywood's legendary male icons in paper doll form I found this Clark Gable paper doll.

He was known as "The King of Hollywood's Golden Age". His style has become as iconic as his films. He was known for his sophisticated appearance, often wearing clothes that accentuated his broad shoulders and narrow waist. The brilliantine hair and mustache added charm to his look. Gable showed up in tailored suits, white shirts and smartly tailored trousers.

Gable's fashion choices were unmistakable and iconic, showing that the "King of Hollywood" had plenty of style and talent.
