The Dragon Lady from Terry and the Pirates

"The Dragon Lady, also known as Madam Deal, was a well-known character in the U.S. comic strip Terry and the Pirates, created by Milton Caniff, and in the movie serial, comic books, and TV series based on the comic strip. Her real name is Lai Choi San and her first appearance was in 1934 in the first Sunday strip story."

Milton Caniff explained, in 1973, that Joan had been the model "in appearance only, not personality. I saw her in some movie [Chained, 1934] in which she played a siren. She had her hair parted in the middle and wore a high-collared cape. And that became The Dragon Lady."

Here is the sketch given personally to Joan by cartoonist Milton Caniff.  On the right is a 1964 birthday greeting (with acknowledgement of her inspiration for his "Dragon Lady" character).

E surgiu a Dragon Lady".

Cindy Sherman's animated short "Doll Clothes"

This is about paper dolls! I found this on the Internet and I want to share it with you.

Cindy Sherman (born 1954) is the well-known American artist for her  photography work with self-portraits.

"When I was in college, I made this book of doll clothes for my photography course. I was documenting a piece that I had already made for a film course, but I wanted to bring the doll to life so I shot myself doing all the poses, and it became this goofy little film. It completely ties in to everything I’m doing now because I decided that I liked the cut-out figures more than the film." - Cindy Sherman

"Doll Clothes" is a short black and white silent film, one of her first super-8 mm films, with about 2 minutes and was not seen since 1975, the year it was made. One of the copies it's now part of the Tate gallery collection.

"The film begins with a shot of the cover of a book (made by the artist) which is decorated with a flowery border and photographic cut-outs of women wearing old-fashioned hats and clothes. Inside the book on the left-hand side is a photographic cut-out of young woman (Sherman) in her underwear housed in a laminated sleeve underneath the label ‘DOLL’. On the right-hand side underneath the label ‘CLOTHES’ are plastic sleeves containing cut-outs of various outfits. The ‘doll’ comes to life and looks through the selection of clothes, grouped under categories such as ‘SCHOOL’ or ‘CASUAL’. Once dressed, she leaves the book and moves onto an adjacent surface featuring a hair brush, make-up and other accessories. The doll checks her appearance in a mirror, before a pair of large human hands enter the frame, take off the doll’s outfit, and put her and the clothes back into their respective sleeves. Returned to just her underwear, the doll appears to be frustrated, and the book closes." (Martin, R. (2014, May) Cindy Sherman: Doll Clothes, 1975, in: http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/sherman-doll-clothes-t12571#3)

- Cindy Sherman
